My name is Moona Laybourne. I’m a Finnish visual artist based in Innsbruck, Austria.
Working exclusively with coloured pencils, I create large-scale still life drawings that transform familiar objects into something unexpected. By isolating and enlarging everyday subjects, I invite viewers to slow down and notice what might otherwise go unseen.
I have always been an observer: deeply fascinated by people, places, and details. I could people-watch for hours, and I could also spend a day in a foreign supermarket scanning through all the packaging. For me, these observations are some of the most beautiful parts of being human. I think we are constantly surrounded by moments worth noticing, and over time, these collected memories and details have naturally become the foundation of my work.
I collect subjects as I move through the world, but the work comes together in the Studio, at the large drawing table my husband and I built together in our home.
From this space, I create my original coloured pencil drawings and develop my limited edition releases. I work closely with trusted fine art printer and a local framer to ensure that every artwork is produced with the same care and attention as the original drawing. Every order, whether an original artwork or a limited edition print, is handled personally and thoughtfully.
Beyond individual works, the studio is where larger collections begin to take shape. I am currently building a collection inspired by my home country of Finland, exploring the traditions, food, and everyday details that makes Finns feel deeply at home.
The studio is always evolving, and I love the connection that happens when a piece of my work finds its way into someone else’s life. Seeing where each artwork ends up, and the meaning it takes on for the person who chooses it, is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
If you have a question, an idea, or simply want to say hello, I would love to hear from you.
