The Artist

Hi, my name is Moona Laybourne. I’m a visual artist, working exclusively with colour pencils.

I am a Finnish-born artist based in the Austrian Alps. I live here with my husband, Chad, and our little boy.

My background is in architecture, which strongly influences how I approach my drawings, especially in scale, texture, and light. I’ve always been creative and made things, but it wasn’t until 2024, during pregnancy and early motherhood, that drawing became a part of the daily craft. In a time that felt overwhelming and unfamiliar, drawing became a way to slow down. It was also a way to reconnect with a sense of self that felt fragile in those early months of becoming a mother.

I work exclusively with colour pencils, building each piece slowly, layer by layer, over hundreds of hours. I’m not particularly patient in most areas of life, but drawing is one of the exceptions. The slowness is so essential.

My subjects are often simple. Food and everyday objects, from my own memories. By enlarging them and spending an unusual amount of time with them, I aim to make the ordinary feel noticed and intimate.

I release my work in limited editions so each piece can remain personal, something to live with rather than simply observe. I give the work my full attention, and I hope you bring your own memories and experiences to it. That exchange is what completes every piece.
